Coronavirus - latest information and advice
INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS REGARDING WUHAN NOVEL CORONAVIRUS INFECTION
All travellers who develop relevant symptoms ( for example respiratory symptoms, shortness of breath, cough, fever) however mild, within 14 days of returning or transitioning from mainland China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau should not attend the practice, but should remain at home and immediately call NHS 111 for advice.
Stay well this Winter
People are being urged to keep an extra special eye on themselves and the people they care for over the winter period so minor illnesses don’t become more serious.
People who are older or have long term conditions may be particularly vulnerable and getting help earlier may prevent concerns becoming more serious.
- Have your flu jab if you are eligible
- If you start to feel ill, get help from your pharmacy
- Keep your home warm, at least 18 degrees
- Make sure you take any medication as directed
- Ensure you order any repeat prescriptions in good time as many surgeries and pharmacies close over Christmas
- Keep a supply of cold and flu remedies in the house so you don’t need to go out if the weather is bad
- If you are prescribed antibiotics finish the course

Important changes to Repeat Prescription Ordering
If your pharmacy orders your repeat medicines for you, please read on.
- Across Milton Keynes all practices are changing the way that patients order their medication.
- This will only affect you if your prescriptions are ordered via a pharmacy or appliance contractor. The only exception is prescriptions for feed solutions supplied by Abbott.
- If you request your prescription directly from the surgery nothing will change.
- The dispensing and delivery arrangements will not change; it is just the ordering process that will change.
- If your prescriptions do not go electronically you will need to collect the paper script yourself from the surgery.
What is changing?
From 2nd September 2019, we will no longer accept prescription requests from pharmacies for the majority of our patients. Therefore we are asking you to order your medicine directly from the surgery, rather than allowing your pharmacy to do it for you.
How can my medication be ordered?
From the 2nd September 2019 the surgery will only accept repeat requests from patients, a nominated family member or from a carer. From this date onwards, your prescription will need to be ordered using one of the following options:
- Online ordering (via website or smartphone app) – If you do not already have this set up, please speak to reception to apply for SystmOne online where you can book appointments and order repeat prescriptions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Ask us, or your pharmacy, for a right hand-side of your repeat prescription to order the items you need. Drop this off or post it to the surgery (with a stamped addressed envelope if you want your prescription posted back to you).
We encourage patients to nominate a pharmacy for the free Electronic Prescription Service. This service allows us to send your prescription directly to your chosen pharmacy. Further information about this service can be found on the on-line ordering system or from the practice.
Why is this happening?
When patients are in control of ordering their own medication less waste is created. This is because you know what you need. Less waste means we can have more funds available for the NHS locally. Please also consider whether you need to obtain the item on prescription or whether you could purchase it over the counter if it is for minor illnesses.

How We Use Your Medical Records - Important Information for Patients
- We handle all medical records in-line with laws on data protection and confidentiality
- Our guiding principle is that we hold your information in the strictest confidence
- We share medical records with those who are involved in providing you with care and treatment
- Sometimes we share medical records for medical research but we don’t share any patient identifiable data in these circumstances without express consent
- You can object to your information being used for medical research and to plan health services
- We share information when the law requires us to do so e.g. to prevent infectious diseases from spreading or to check care being provided is safe
- You have the right to object to your medical records being shared with other care providers, if this limits your treatment options we will tell you
- You have the right to access a copy of your medical record
- You have the right to have any mistakes corrected and forward any complaints to the Information Commissioner’s Office

The practice is able to treat patients with minor injuries at the surgery. Patients can therefore access the care they need close to home, reducing the need to attend A&E. Your GP can treat:
- Sprains; hands, arms, legs, feet
- Minor Bruises
- Minor Burns; scalds, blisters
- Lacerations and Minor Head Injuries; bump to your head, cuts, wounds, scratches
Did Not Attend Appointment
The healthcare team at Fishermead Medical Centre would like to say THANK YOU to all our patients who attend their appointments.
Unfortunately 159 appointments were wasted during October 2019. These are appointments where a doctor or nurse could have been seeing a patient who needed our care and support.
You may have on occasions, experienced difficulty booking an appointment. This may not have been the case if patients who fail to attend their appointments had informed us in advance and cancelled.
Please let the surgery know if you cannot attend. This allows us to make the appointment available to another patient. Thank you for your co-operation.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)
With EPS you order your prescriptions in the usual way, but you can collect your medication without the green paper prescription. Your prescription will be sent electronically instead.
To nominate to use EPS please talk to your pharmacy or ask at our reception desk for more information. You can amend your chosen pharmacy at any time, should you for example, want to collect your presciption whilst on holiday. Contact the surgery for more information.

Named Accountable GP
In line with NHS recommended best practice, all patients will be allocated a named accountable GP to help deliver more personalised coordinated care. This will not affect which GP you choose to see, patients can request an appointment with any of the three GP's when available. For more information please contact the practice.
Patient Participation Group (PPG)
Fishermead Medical Centre has a ‘Virtual’ Patient Participation Group for any of our patients who are interested in helping us shape and improve our services and take part in local surveys.
As we realise that it is not always possible to attend meetings our group operates through emails. We would like to expand our patient group, if you are interested in joining please complete a ‘PPG interest form’ at the reception desk. We would very much welcome your input, support and help to improve our services in the future.

Telephone Call Recording
